Abstract
Accountability in public service is a fundamental requirement for the prevention of abuse of power and for ensuring that official power is utilized for the realization of good governance. Though Nigeria has designed legal measures towards an accountable public service, the country still frequently grapples with the absence of accountability by its public officers. This paper examines the legal framework for public service accountability in Nigeria with emphasis on the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Acts. It identifies inherent weaknesses in the existing framework and offers recommendations towards its strengthening.
